Finished first pass through Alapati 12c OCP upgrade book

I just finished reading Sam Alapati’s 12c OCP upgrade book for the first time and I really like it because of the content that it covered which I hadn’t discovered through my study of the Oracle manuals.  Also, it did a good job explaining some things that Oracle’s manuals left unclear.

After reading each chapter I took the end of chapter test and got between 60% and 75% of the questions right.  Next I plan to take the computer based test that was on the CD that came with the book and which covers both parts of the upgrade exam.

I did find minor errors throughout the book, but I still found it very useful especially after having already studied the same topics on my own without a study guide like this one to direct me.  The author’s insights into the test and the material it covers adds value because they guide me to the areas that I need to focus on.

    Hi Bobby,

Good to know. Can you point out the errors or any major one you found in the book ?

I just bought the both books, and I will start to read soon. Later I will buy the tests.

How is your progress and when you will re-test ?

I’m hoping to retest by the end of August. I’m making progress, working through all of the sample questions right now. There are some obvious typos which anyone would find right away. I need to look back on the things I’ve underlined and annotated and see if there is anything important to pass along. An example I just hit – the answer to question 24 on chapter 3’s self test says that common roles have to start with c## which is correct. But the question doesn’t say common roles, it just says roles. So, there was a snafu coordinating between the question and the answer. The answer is right, it just doesn’t match the question. But, most people would find this quickly enough.

      Satya,

For $50 I think you should go ahead and take the test just to get exposure to the topics that you need to get better at. Now that I think about it I wish I had taken the beta version of the test just to be exposed to what topics I need to study. I’ve never done that before but it makes a lot of sense. It’s definitely worth $50 to take the test once even if you fail it.

      • And what’s the difference from this Beta to the one you took?

        • Bobby says:

The test I took was an upgrade from 11g OCP to 12c OCP. The test Satya is looking at is 11g OCA to 12c OCP. So, instead of getting your 11g OCP first and then going to 12c OCP you can skip directly from 11g OCA to 12c OCP. It covers more ground and should be harder than the test I took, but I’m not sure since I haven’t researched it or taken the test.

          • Oh I see, In fact, I am 10g OCP, so I believe I have to take the same one you took before. The beta really can be a good idea for training, but the scope will be a little different I believe.
